What Is the SHA Assessment Certificate?

This is the part of SHA licensing applicants ask about most, and it is where the process is most often misunderstood. The assessment is the Sharjah Health Authority's evaluation of whether your qualifications, experience and verified documents support the professional title and scope you have applied for. It sits between document verification and licence issuance.

What the assessment actually decides

Two things. First, your professional category and title — whether you are classified as, for example, a general practitioner, a specialist, a registered nurse or an allied health professional, which depends on qualifications and documented years of practice. Second, whether you must sit an examination or qualify for exemption from it.

Where the assessment outcome fits in the process

The typical sequence is: application and document submission, primary source verification of your credentials through DataFlow, assessment of the verified file against the category you requested, examination or exemption, and then licence issuance linked to an employing facility. The assessment outcome is what determines whether the next step is an exam booking or a direct move to licensing.

Why assessments come back with remarks

Almost always for document reasons rather than professional ones. The most common are experience letters that state only a job title and dates without describing the clinical duties, scope or setting; qualifications that do not clearly map to the requested category; a gap in the practice history that is not explained; and documents whose name spelling differs from the passport. Each of these produces a query rather than a refusal, but each costs a round of correspondence.

The SHA Exam: Format, Exemptions and Preparation

SHA stands for Sharjah Health Authority, and the SHA exam is the licensing examination it uses to confirm that an applicant can practise safely within the professional category they have been assessed into.

Who has to sit it

Whether an examination is required depends on the professional category, the qualifications held, and in some cases on licences already held with other recognised authorities. Applicants who hold a current licence from a recognised regulator, or whose qualifications and experience meet defined thresholds, may be exempt. Exemption is decided by the authority on the assessed file — it is not something an applicant can assume in advance.

What the exam covers

The examination is scoped to the professional category applied for, testing clinical knowledge relevant to that scope of practice rather than general medicine. Delivery is through the authority's approved examination arrangements, and the applicable format, duration and pass mark are set by the authority for each category.

If you do not pass

Re-sits are generally permitted, subject to the authority's rules on waiting periods and the number of attempts allowed. Because these rules differ by category and change from time to time, it is worth confirming them before booking rather than after a result.

Preparing sensibly

The most useful preparation is scope-specific: study against the category you have been assessed into, not against a general syllabus. Applicants who prepare for the wrong scope are the ones most often surprised by the paper.

SHA Licence Categories and Facility Linking

Any healthcare professional practising in the Emirate of Sharjah needs a licence from the Sharjah Health Authority. A licence from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or the Ministry of Health does not permit practice in Sharjah — the emirate has its own regulator and its own process.

Professional categories

SHA licenses across the healthcare spectrum: physicians including general practitioners, specialists and consultants; dentists and dental specialists; nurses and midwives; pharmacists and pharmacy technicians; and allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, laboratory technologists, radiographers and dietitians. Each category carries its own qualification and experience requirements.

Why the licence is linked to a facility

A SHA professional licence is issued in connection with a licensed employing facility rather than as a standalone permission to practise. In practice this means an offer or sponsorship from a SHA-licensed facility is part of the process, and that moving to a different employer requires the licence record to be updated rather than simply starting work elsewhere.

What this means if you are still job hunting

The eligibility and verification stages — assessment of your qualifications and DataFlow verification of your credentials — can generally be progressed before the facility is settled, which is worth doing because verification is usually the longest part. The facility-linked stages come afterwards.

SHA Licence Renewal and Continuing Education

A SHA licence runs for a fixed term and must be renewed before it expires. Renewal is not automatic, and practising on a lapsed licence is a compliance issue for both the professional and the employing facility.

What renewal usually requires

Current employment with a licensed facility, a valid passport, visa and Emirates ID, evidence of continuing professional development where it applies to your category, and settlement of the applicable fees. Where any of your personal details or qualifications have changed since the last renewal, those changes need to be reflected on the record first.

Continuing professional development

Many professional categories carry a CPD or CME requirement that must be met within the licence period. Leaving this to the final weeks before expiry is the most common reason a renewal runs late, because accredited activity cannot always be completed at short notice.

Changing employer or leaving

Moving between facilities requires the licence to be transferred rather than left registered to the previous employer. Leaving Sharjah or the profession should be accompanied by proper cancellation — an open licence left behind can complicate a future application.

Moving between emirates

A licence held with one authority does not transfer automatically to another. Moving from Dubai to Sharjah, for example, means a fresh application to SHA — although verification already completed through DataFlow can often be reused, which shortens the process considerably. A licence lets you practise. It does not, by itself, get you into the country or keep your family with you — and those run on a separate track that starts before the licence is issued.

The employing facility sponsors your residence visa while the licence is being activated, so the two processes overlap rather than follow each other.
