The Medical Test and Biometrics, Practically
Two appointments sit between an entry permit and a stamped residence visa. Neither is difficult, and both have validity windows that quietly govern the whole timeline.
The medical fitness test
Required for residence visa applicants above the age the authority specifies. It is a screening test carried out at an approved centre, and the certificate is issued for a defined validity period. Visa stamping must be completed within that window — if it closes, the test is repeated, at the applicant's cost.
Emirates ID biometrics
Fingerprints and a photograph captured at an authorised centre. This requires the applicant in person; nothing about it can be done remotely or by an agent. The card is issued once the visa is stamped.
Why the sequence matters
Both stages have to fall inside the entry permit's own validity. Booking them late in the permit period leaves no margin, and a missed slot can mean restarting part of the sequence rather than simply rebooking.
Where Applicants Lose Time
Booking too late in the permit window. The most common cause. Entry permits, medical certificates and biometric appointments each have their own clock, and they have to overlap.
Peak-period availability. Approved centres get busy, and a slot that would normally be available within days can be a week out. That matters when a job start date is fixed.
Documents not matching. The passport presented at the centre must match the application exactly. A renewed passport with a new number, presented against an application carrying the old one, stops the appointment at the desk.
Assuming a child needs a medical. Younger children are generally exempt, which is why a child's application costs less — but the applicable age is set by the health authority and differs between emirates, so it is worth confirming rather than assuming either way.
