The Order Matters
Cancellation runs in the reverse of issuance, and both sides have to close. Labour first with MOHRE — the work permit and registered contract are cancelled, and end-of-service matters are settled as part of closing the employment relationship. Immigration second — the residence visa is cancelled and the record closed.
Leaving one side open is the single most common reason an employee is later blocked from a new visa, or an employer blocked from a new work permit. And it is almost always discovered months later, at the worst possible moment: when the new application is rejected.
Ninety days to start the next job
This is the deadline almost nobody mentions, and it catches people out. Where an employee is moving to a new employer, the new work permit application must be submitted within 90 days of the previous permit being cancelled. Inside that window the transfer route is straightforward. Outside it, the simple path closes and the new employer faces a longer process.
If you are cancelling with a new job already lined up, that clock starts the day the cancellation goes through — not the day you finish your notice period.
The grace period
Once the residence visa is cancelled, there is a grace period during which the person can remain in the UAE to transfer to a new sponsor or arrange their exit. After it closes, overstay fines accrue daily. The length of that period is set by the immigration authority and has been amended before, so confirm the current rule rather than relying on what applied last time.
Leaving the country permanently
Cancel before you go. An open visa left behind can complicate a future UAE application, and cancellation is considerably simpler to complete while the person is still in the country than from abroad.
