The Chain, and Why Order Matters More Than Speed
Attestation is procedural rather than difficult. What makes it expensive is that the order is fixed: a step taken out of sequence has to be redone from the point of the error, and there is no shortcut back.
The standard sequence
A document issued abroad is attested first by the competent authority in the country of issue — often a notary, then a state or federal department, then the foreign ministry. It is then legalised at the UAE embassy or consulate in that country. Finally, after arrival, it is attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Only then is it accepted here.
Where the sequence breaks
People routinely bring a document to the UAE having only had it notarised at home, and discover the embassy step cannot be done from here — it has to happen in the issuing country. That means couriering the document back, which is the single most common and most avoidable delay in attestation.
Translation comes after, not before

By Document Type
Educational certificates
Degrees, diplomas and transcripts for employment, professional licensing and equivalency. Universities differ enormously in how quickly they will authenticate a document, and some require the request to come from the graduate rather than a third party — worth checking before assuming an agent can handle it.
Personal certificates
Marriage and birth certificates for family sponsorship. If the marriage took place in the UAE, the certificate is issued locally and the chain does not apply. Names on birth certificates must match the parents' passports; transliteration differences are a frequent cause of rejection at the family visa stage.
Commercial documents
Certificates of incorporation, memoranda and articles, board resolutions and powers of attorney for company registration and share transfers. These usually also need a company stamp and an authorised signatory, and the signatory's authority itself sometimes has to be evidenced.
Police clearance
Required for some visa and licensing routes. These carry a short validity period, so obtaining one too early means obtaining it twice. Timing it against the rest of the file is the practical answer.
