An employee visa renewal is two renewals, not one, and both have their own clock. PROXPAT runs them for employers so nobody discovers the problem on the day the visa expires.

Employment Visa Renewal in the UAE: Timing, Fees and the Steps in Order
An employment visa in the UAE is two records: the work permit and employment contract held with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), and the residence permit held with the immigration authority. Renewal means renewing both. Renewing one and forgetting the other is the single most common reason a company ends up paying fines on an employee who never left.
This page is written for employers. If the employee has already left the company, see visa cancellation instead, and if the visa has already lapsed, see what happens after cancellation. Companies with regular renewals usually put this work on a monthly PRO retainer rather than quoting it each time.
Please note: the figures below are taken from the ICP and MOHRE service pages. Residence renewals for employees sponsored in Dubai are processed by GDRFA Dubai, and other emirates by their own authority, so confirm your own case before acting.
Start at 60 Days, Not at 60 Hours
MOHRE states that a work permit and employment contract renewal may proceed 60 days prior to its expiration date. That window exists because the steps run in sequence and each one can stall: a lapsed establishment card, a company violation, a passport with less than six months left. Sixty days is enough for all of it. Sixty hours is not.
| Step | Authority | What the official service page states |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Work permit and employment contract | MOHRE | Completion time 2 working days. Free through the MOHRE website and smart app apart from federal charges; business centre commission is capped at AED 72. The applicant must be the establishment's authorised signatory |
| 2. Residence permit | ICP (or GDRFA in Dubai) | Service completion duration 2 days. Application fees AED 100, renewal of the residence permit AED 100 per year, smart service fees AED 100 |
The labour side comes first, because the residence renewal rests on a valid work permit and contract. See work permits and labour cards for the permit types and company categories.
What the Government Charges for a Renewal
| Item | Published amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Residence renewal application fee | AED 100 | ICP |
| Residence permit renewal, per year | AED 100 | ICP |
| Smart service fee | AED 100 | ICP |
| ICP total per renewal cycle | AED 300 | ICP |
| MOHRE work permit and contract renewal | Free on the website and app apart from federal charges; business centre commission capped at AED 72 | MOHRE |
| Medical fitness test | AED 250 plus printing fees for employees and company workers; AED 350 for private drivers, nursery supervisors and domestic help | Emirates Health Services |
Please note: these are the authority amounts only. Federal charges and the work permit fee vary by company category, and PROXPAT's service fee is separate and quoted before we start. The full picture sits on our government fee page.
Conditions That Quietly Block a Renewal
- The passport must be valid for no less than six months, which ICP lists as a condition of renewal.
- All the requirements that applied when the residence was first issued must still be met at renewal, including valid health insurance.
- MOHRE requires the establishment to hold a valid licence without any registered violations.
- The MOHRE application must be submitted by the establishment's authorised signatory.
- The company's establishment card must be valid, because immigration transactions run through it.
None of these are discovered at the counter in a good month. They are discovered on day 58 in a bad one, which is why the check belongs at the start of the window rather than the end.
Medical Fitness and Emirates ID at Renewal
A renewal is not only paperwork. Most employees repeat the medical fitness test, and the Emirates ID is renewed alongside the residence. ICP lists a medical report among the required documents for most residency categories.
Practically, this is the part that needs the employee physically present, so it is worth booking early in the 60 days rather than assuming a free slot exists in the last week. See medical and biometrics coordination for the centres and what the visit involves.
Urgent Employment Visa Renewal in Dubai
Companies usually search for an urgent renewal when the expiry is days away. What actually shortens the timeline is narrower than most people expect, because the authority service times are already short: MOHRE lists 2 working days and ICP lists 2 days. The delay is almost never the authority.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Complete documents at first submission | A rejected or returned application restarts the clock rather than pausing it |
| No company violations or unpaid fines | MOHRE requires a valid licence without registered violations before the renewal proceeds |
| Passport with more than six months left | A short passport is a condition failure, not a delay you can push through |
| A medical slot booked, not assumed | The employee has to attend; this is the step a company cannot compress |
| Establishment card valid | An expired card stops immigration transactions for every employee at once |
Please note: no one can guarantee a renewal date. Approvals and timelines are decided by the relevant authority. What can be controlled is whether the file is complete and the conditions are met on the first attempt.
If the Visa Has Already Expired
If the residence permit has already lapsed, the renewal becomes a different conversation. ICP lists grace periods of 30 to 180 days depending on the residency type, and a fine of AED 50 for each day of stay in the country after the visa has expired.
Fines have to be settled before a new status is issued. For an employee who is leaving rather than staying, see visa cancellation services and what happens after cancellation.
A Realistic Renewal Timeline
| Stage | Official service time | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Document and condition check | Not an authority step | Passport validity, insurance, establishment card, company violations |
| MOHRE work permit and contract renewal | 2 working days | Authorised signatory, valid licence with no violations |
| Medical fitness test | Appointment dependent | The employee attending in person |
| ICP or GDRFA residence renewal | 2 days | Complete file, valid medical and insurance |
| Emirates ID | Issued alongside the residence | Biometrics if required |
Two working days plus two days is a short official timeline. The 60-day window exists for everything around it.
How PROXPAT Handles Renewals for Employers
Renewal dates tracked before the 60-day window opens
Passport, insurance and establishment card checked first
MOHRE work permit and contract renewal
Medical fitness booking and coordination
ICP or GDRFA residence renewal
Emirates ID alongside the residence
Company violations cleared before submission
One point of contact for every employee file
Companies renewing more than a handful of visas a year usually move this onto a monthly PRO retainer, which covers new visas, renewals, cancellations and licence work for a fixed fee instead of a separate quote each time. For a single renewal, our per-transaction fee applies.
